It falls apart fast once you're landing jumps, hammering whoops, or riding anything rougher than a fire road — harsh through the stroke, quick to bottom out, and not adjustable enough to dial in for your weight or riding style. What You're Actually Upgrading
"Suspension upgrade" usually means two separate jobs — swapping the front fork and swapping the rear shock. You can do either one on its own, but doing both in the same session means you only set the sag and compare ride height once, and you walk away with a bike that actually feels balanced front-to-rear instead of stiff up front and soft in back (or the reverse).
Tools You'll Need
- Metric socket and wrench set (8mm–19mm covers most Surron hardware)
- Torque wrench — suspension bolts are not a "tighten until it feels right" job
- Shock spanner wrench (usually included with an aftermarket shock)
- Zip ties, a rag, and a bike stand or milk crate to get the wheels off the ground
Time Estimate
Budget 2.5–3.5 hours for both ends if this is your first time. The fork swap runs about 45–60 minutes; the rear shock is closer to 30–45 minutes. Add another 30 minutes for sag setup and a test ride before you call it done.
Step 1: Swap the Front Fork
- Support the bike so the front wheel is off the ground, and remove the front wheel and front brake caliper (leave the brake line connected — just zip-tie the caliper out of the way).
- Loosen the triple clamp pinch bolts (top and bottom) before removing anything else — this saves you fighting a seized stanchion later.
- Remove the stock fork legs and slide in the new fork — an EXT Ferro E-MX Fork is the most common swap here, a true dual-crown inverted fork built specifically for Surron, Talaria, and E-Ride Pro platforms.
- Set stanchion height to match the fork manufacturer's spec (usually flush or a few millimeters proud of the top clamp), then torque the pinch bolts to spec — not more.
- Reinstall the front wheel and caliper, and pump the front brake lever a few times before riding to reseat the pads.
Step 2: Swap the Rear Shock
- Support the swingarm so it's not hanging under spring tension, then remove the lower shock bolt first, followed by the upper.
- Compare the eye-to-eye length and stroke of your new shock against the stock unit before installing — a mismatch here is the most common installation mistake.
- An EXT Arma MX Rear Shock is a direct bolt-in for most Ultra Bee and Light Bee X builds and gives you real compression and rebound adjustment the stock shock doesn't offer.
- Install the new shock upper bolt first, then lower, torquing both to spec once the swingarm is at normal ride height (not fully extended or compressed).
Step 3: Set Sag and Test Ride
With both ends installed, set race sag before you do anything else — roughly 25–30% of total travel with the rider on board is a solid starting point for trail riding. Adjust preload on the rear shock and air pressure or spring preload up front to get there. Then ride it. Suspension setup is iterative: expect to make small clicker or preload adjustments after your first real ride once you feel how it actually behaves under load.
A Few Things That Trip People Up
Don't skip the torque wrench — suspension mounting bolts see huge cyclic loads, and an under-torqued bolt will work itself loose fast. Don't mix fork and shock brands blindly without checking travel numbers match your frame's linkage ratio, or you'll end up with a bike that's unbalanced no matter how you adjust clickers. And don't rush the sag setup — it's five minutes that determines whether the rest of your adjustments actually make sense.
